Eileen’s news about Dumbledore being gay stunned me. Though I had my suspicions, I was quite skeptical of Harry Potter having a gay character. People deem homosexuality as a taboo topic, especially in children’s books.

Well, this information gives the story more depth. It is a more plausible explanation as to why Dumbledore took years to act against Grindelwald. I find it immensely saddening that Dumbledore’s love was unrequited. Needless to say, Dumbledore remains as my favourite character in the Harry Potter books and is still my hero.

Having long declared my stand on homosexuality (check my site notice), I shall repeat it again. Homosexuality is as natural as the gender differences of male and female. Gay people should not have to face bigotry from society. Sadly, the majority, especially in Singapore, remains homophobic.

As Hagrid puts it best: “Great man… Dumbledore.”
